Gel nails cost more than regular polish, and the menu price is rarely the whole bill. Removal, nail art, length and tip all add up, and the same gel manicure can be $30 in one city and $65 in another.
To give you real numbers, we checked the posted menus of 18 salons in 11 US cities on October 12, 2026. Every salon price below comes from those menus, and each salon is linked.
Quick answer: A salon gel manicure costs about $50 in the US, based on 16 posted salon menus checked in October 2026. Prices run $30 to $65. A gel pedicure runs about $61, gel removal adds about $15, and Gel-X extensions run about $77. At home, a starter kit usually pays for itself by your second manicure.

Gel Nail Prices at a Glance
This table shows the lowest, middle (median) and highest price for each gel service across the salons we checked. The median is the middle price on the list.
| Service | Salons with a posted price | Lowest | Median | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gel manicure | 16 | $30 | $50 | $65 |
| Gel pedicure | 10 | $40 | $61 | $90 |
| Builder gel (structured manicure) | 10 | $45 | $65 | $100 |
| Gel-X or soft gel extensions, full set | 15 | $55 | $77 | $125 |
| Gel polish removal | 14 | $8 | $15 | $21 |
| Regular polish change, hands | 8 | $12 | $15.50 | $25 |
| Regular manicure (for comparison) | 16 | $20 | $30 | $50 |
A gel polish change on your hands costs more than a regular one. Six salons list it, at $20 to $30, with $25 the most common price. You get new gel color without the full manicure.
Builder Gel and Gel-X Prices
Builder gel is a thicker gel that adds strength to your own nails. Most salons charge $45 to $100 for it, with a $65 median. Angel Nail Salon in Miami lists hard builder gel at $45 for short to medium nails, while Bellacures Beverly Hills charges $100.
Gel-X and other soft gel extensions add length with a full gel tip. The median full set is $77. Expect to pay more as you go longer. Poppy Nails in Los Angeles charges $80 for short Gel-X and $120 for extra long, so a long coffin nail shape on extensions will land near the top of that ladder.
Fills on builder gel and Gel-X are cheaper than a new set. Capital Nailbar in Nashville charges $77 for a full set of either and $67 for a fill. Some salons also sell a “Russian” or structured builder manicure as a premium tier. Poppy Nails and 312 Nails Spa in Chicago both list theirs at $95.
What a Gel Manicure Price Includes (and What Costs Extra)
A standard gel manicure covers nail shaping, cuticle care, a base coat, one gel color, a top coat and curing under an LED or UV lamp. If you are new to it, our guide on what a gel manicure is walks through each step.
Most menus price one solid color. Nail Box Miami spells it out: its $35 gel manicure is “1 color only.” Anything past that usually costs more.
Common add-ons and their prices
| Add-on | What the salons charge |
|---|---|
| Removing your old gel | $8 to $21, median $15 (sometimes included) |
| French tips | $10 to $25, median $10 |
| Nail art, per nail | $3 to $10, median $5 (at salons that price per nail) |
| Longer length on extensions | $10 to $20 per size step at Poppy Nails |
| Paying by card at a cash-price salon | About 3.5% more at 312 Nails Spa |
Is removal in the price?
Salons handle removal in three ways.
- Included: Capital Nailbar’s $57 gel manicure includes taking off your old gel.
- Two prices: Lux Nail Spa in Houston lists $36 without removal and $41 with it. Kim Studio Nails in Seattle lists $37 and $42.
- Added on: Poppy Nails adds $10 to its $60 gel manicure when removal is needed. Sundays in New York adds $18.
When you compare two salons, ask whether the quoted price covers taking off your current set. A $45 manicure with free removal beats a $40 one plus $15.

Gel Prices by Salon Type
Where you book matters more than almost anything else. In our data, the upscale studios and the neighborhood salons sit at opposite ends of the price range.
| Salon type | Examples from our data | Gel manicure prices | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upscale or boutique studio | Bellacures Beverly Hills, Poppy Nails, Sundays, Boston’s Nail Lounge, Paintbox | $58 to $65 | $65 |
| Neighborhood salon | Angel Nail Salon, Purity Nail Bar, Nail Box Miami, Lux Nail Spa, Kim Studio Nails, Coco Nail Spa, Creative Nail Spa | $30 to $45 | $36 |
So what does a $30 gap buy you?
- More time per client. Sundays books its gel manicure as a 50 minute service. Manhattan Nails Salon lists 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Product choices. Sundays sells its service as a “Nontoxic Gel Manicure.” Some studios only remove soft gel. Paintbox says it cannot remove acrylic, hard gel or dip.
- Rent and location. The same chain charges different prices in different cities. Bellacures charges $58 for its gel manicure in Beverly Hills and $55 at its Dallas Preston Center salon. Its basic manicure gap is bigger: $37 versus $25.
Some salons do not sell gel as its own service. They add it to a regular manicure. MiniLuxe charges $25 on top of a classic manicure that starts at $32, so you pay $57 or more. The City Nail Bar & Lash in Denver adds $15 to a $30 express manicure, for $45.
Gel Nail Prices in Different Cities

| New York | Manhattan Nails Salon | $55 | $62 | $17 |

| West Des Moines | Creative Nail Spa | $45 | $55 | $15 |
| Nashville | Capital Nailbar | $57 (removal included) | – | $15 |
Los Angeles and New York sit at the top, with every gel manicure in our data at $55 or more. Miami and Houston sit at the bottom, at $30 to $40. Boston shows the widest spread in one city: $34 at a Brighton neighborhood salon and $65 at two Back Bay and South End studios.
A gel pedicure costs more than a gel manicure at every salon that lists both. The extra runs $5 at Nail Box Miami and $25 at Boston’s Nail Lounge.
Prices also keep climbing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that personal care services, the price group that covers salon visits, rose 4.2% in the 12 months through August 2026. Prices overall rose 3.4%.

How Long Gel Lasts and the Cost Per Week
A gel manicure usually lasts two to three weeks before it grows out or starts to lift. That long wear is the main reason it can cost less per week than regular polish, even though the menu price is higher.
Here is the math with median prices:
- Gel at 3 weeks: $50 divided by 3 is about $16.67 a week.
- Gel at 2 weeks: $50 divided by 2 is $25 a week.
- Regular polish: it often chips within 5 to 7 days, so $30 works out to $30 to $42 a week.
Add a 20% tip and gel at three weeks comes to $60 per visit, or $20 a week. That is about $1,040 a year if you never skip an appointment.
Proper curing is part of what makes gel last. If you do your own nails, our gel polish cure time tool shows how long each coat needs under your lamp.
Gel vs Regular vs Dip vs Acrylic: Cost Compared
This table uses our median salon prices. For acrylic, the ongoing cost is the fill, since you only pay for a full set at the start.
| Service | Median price | Price range | Typical wear | Cost per week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular manicure | $30 | $20 to $50 | 5 to 7 days | $30 to $42 |
| Gel manicure | $50 | $30 to $65 | 2 to 3 weeks | $16.67 to $25 |
| Dip powder | $50 | $47 to $65 | 3 to 4 weeks | $12.50 to $16.67 |
| Acrylic fill | $55 ($65 full set) | $40 to $80 | 2 to 3 weeks between fills | $18.33 to $27.50 |
Dip comes out cheapest per week on paper. Gel is close behind and usually easier on your budget than acrylic fills. Regular polish is the cheapest per visit and the most expensive per week, because it does not last. Our gel vs regular vs press-on nails tool can help you pick based on your schedule and budget. For more on how each formula works, see our guide to types of nail polish.
Doing Gel Nails at Home: What It Costs
An at-home gel starter kit usually costs somewhere around $30 to $80. Prices vary by brand, lamp quality and how many colors you get. Most kits include an LED or UV lamp, base and top coats, a few gel colors and a file.
After the kit, your ongoing costs are small. You will need acetone, cotton and foil or plastic wrap for removal, plus new colors and new base and top coats when they run out. Plan on roughly $5 per manicure to cover that over time.
The break-even math
Say you would otherwise get a $50 salon gel manicure every three weeks and tip $10. That is $60 a visit. At home, you spend $60 on a mid-range kit, then about $5 each time you redo your nails.
- Manicure 1: salon $60, home $65.
- Manicure 2: salon $120, home $70. Home is now ahead.
- Manicure 9 (about six months): salon $540, home $105.
Even with an $80 kit, you come out ahead by the second set. The honest catch is skill. Your first few home manicures may lift early or look uneven, and you will spend 45 minutes or more on each one.

Removal Fees and Why Peeling Costs More Later
Gel polish removal costs $8 to $21 at the salons we checked, with a $15 median.
It is tempting to skip that fee and peel the gel off when it starts to lift. Don’t. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that picking and scraping off gel can damage your nails. Peeling tends to pull off the top layers of your nail along with the polish.
That damage has a cost. Thin, weak nails can take months to grow out, and the AAD notes that a fingernail takes about six months to grow out fully. Some people book builder gel at a $65 median to cover the weak spots. That is more than four times the cost of a $15 removal.
You can also remove gel at home for a few dollars with acetone, cotton and wrap. Our step-by-step guide on how to get gel polish off shows you how to do it without scraping. If you wear dip instead, see how to remove dip nails.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a gel manicure worth the price?
For most people who keep their nails polished all the time, yes. At the $50 median and three weeks of wear, gel costs about $16.67 a week, while regular polish costs $30 or more a week because it chips sooner. If you only paint your nails for an event, regular polish is the cheaper pick.
Why does gel cost more than a regular manicure?
Gel takes more product, a curing lamp and more time for each coat. At the salons we checked, the median gel manicure costs $20 more than the median regular one, at $50 versus $30. Removal of your last set often adds more.
Do you have to pay for gel removal?
Usually, unless the salon includes it. Removal costs $8 to $21 with a $15 median, and some salons fold it into the gel manicure price, like Capital Nailbar in Nashville. Ask before you book so the total is clear.
How much is a gel manicure with tip?
At the $50 median, a 15% to 20% tip adds $7.50 to $10, for a total of $57.50 to $60. The Emily Post Institute suggests 15% to 20% for a manicurist.
How often should you redo gel nails?
Every two to three weeks, when you see growth at the cuticle or the edges start to lift. The AAD also suggests going without polish for one to two weeks or longer now and then so your nails can recover. Those breaks lower your yearly cost too.
How much is a gel pedicure?
The median gel pedicure in our data is $61, with prices of $40 to $90. Miami salons posted the lowest prices, at $40, and Boston’s Nail Lounge posted the highest, at $90.
What to Budget for Gel Nails
Plan on about $50 for a salon gel manicure, plus $15 if your old gel needs to come off and a 15% to 20% tip. Book every three weeks and that comes to about $20 a week. If you want to cut costs, choose a neighborhood salon, ask whether removal is included, and pay cash where a salon prices cash lower. If you are willing to learn, a home kit pays for itself by your second manicure.
